I don’t know about you, but cleaning my makeup brushes is always on my to-do list… and never ticked off. But it’s not only for hygiene reasons, having a good makeup cleaning, care and even a good makeup storage set up is important for protecting your brushes and products, keeping those bristles in place and the germs away. Helping you get your things in order and keep your brushes as hygienic as possible, here are our top tips and suggestions for makeup storage.

How Should You Store Makeup Brushes?

To protect your brushes, you want to store them stood up and separate from your makeup if you have space. Tossing them into a makeup bag or box along with your products will lead to them getting damaged, or laying them on their side can cause them to become misshapen. To keep your brushes at their best for the longest time, keep them upright in a pot or holder, then they’re also easy to grab when you’re putting your face on.

Dressing Table Makeup Storage

If you’re already got a glam station set up, having your makeup organised and displayed is a nice addition to your vanity. We love acrylic makeup organisers as they’re ideal for keeping makeup neat, but are also easily cleaned and transparent to match and any all bedroom colour schemes. With our customizable organiser you can even remove and change segments to fit all your palettes and products.

Makeup Storage For Small Spaces

If you’ve got a lot of products to fit into not a lot of space, having your brushes out and displayed might not be an option. If you don’t have the room to store your makeup brushes upright, try to keep them in a separate place from your palettes and products, away from any residue or things that could squash them. For small spaces, keep your brushes in a separate makeup pouch or brush roll to cushion the bristles.

Or, keep all your products and tools in one place with a makeup case. Letting you arrange everything neatly as well as keeping it compact and out of the way, a makeup case it ideal for packing your makeup up and storing it out of sight. With a range of different sizes and designs, we’ve got you sorted with makeup storage that you can easily put into a cupboard or take on the go, assured that your brushes are protected.

How Often Should You Clean Makeup Brushes?

If you’re using them daily, you want to be giving your brushes a clean every week. Touching your face and products every day, brushes really are a breeding ground for germs. So getting into a regular washing routine will protect your skin as well as keeping your tools in top condition.

But if you can’t commit to a weekly big wash, try to clean them once a week by rinsing them under warm water and letting them dry. Then give them a thorough wash at least once a month to rid of any product build up.

How To Wash Makeup Brushes

There’s loads of products out there that boast incredible brush cleaning abilities, but all you really need is water and your cleanser.

  1. Get all your brushes together and run a sink of warm water.
  2. Wet a brush at a time then put a small amount of cleanser on your hand.
  3. Swirl the brush on your hand, or on a brush cleaning pad, to get all the products out.
  4. Rinse and repeat until the cleanser and water come out clean.
  5. Leave your brushes to dry upright in a sink caddy or pot.

For product that won’t budge or super messy brushes, try using a bit of shampoo to wash the bristles.

While your brushes are trying, make sure to stand them up right and occasionally use your finger to fluff the bristles. Laying them on their side will cause them to misshape when they’re damp!

How To Keep Your Makeup As Hygienic As Possible

If you’re not careful with your products, makeup can cause havoc on your skin. Besides a good skincare routine and regular brush cleaning, there’s a couple of other things you can do:

  • Always wash your hands before applying your makeup, duh.
  • Regularly wipe down the outside of palettes and products with an anti-bac wipe.
  • Try to use brushes for your concealer rather than the wand that goes in the tube, this stops you from passing any germs or bacteria from your face into the product and vice-versa, especially when concealing blemishes.
  • Make sure everything is sealed and closed properly, this will also keep your products lasting as long as possible.
  • Regularly sort through your collection, re-organise and get rid of any old or out of date products.

How Long Does Makeup Last?

It does depend on the product, but as a general guide:

  • Mascara – 2/3 months
  • Eyeliner – 6/12 months – pencils will last longer than liquid liner as long as you sharpen them.
  • Foundation – 1 year
  • Lipstick – 2 years
  • Eyeshadows – 2 years at least!
